“This is painted from an area just North of Elephant Butte, New Mexico along the Cristobal Mountains. The Rio Grande River runs along the base of these mountains which are also near the reservoir for the lake, the water level was so very low showing the area known as Chalk Bluffs very clearly. Usually we use this landmark to tell just how far up the lake on the river that we actually are. The sun was setting on this day, and they were so easy to make out from the road nearby that we were traveling on.”
